Residential Program FAQs

The Peak Savings Program helps customers save energy, lower their energy costs, and reduce demand on the electric grid. By enrolling, customers allow the Peak Saving Program to automatically manage their energy use via their smart thermostat (adjusting the setpoint by no more than three degrees) on Peak Day Events when electric demand is extremely high. This small change makes a big difference in reducing demand and keeping energy costs low.

The amount of energy the community uses at any given time changes constantly due to weather conditions, residential changes throughout the day, and operations of commercial and industrial companies. Sometimes all these situations overlap, causing the demand for electricity to become extremely high. These “events” are called Peak Day Events, and the goal of the Peak Savings Program is to reduce electric demand quickly and easily, without sacrificing anyone’s comfort at home or at work. Peak Day Events tend to occur when temperatures are very high.

On certain days when demand on the grid is extremely high, the Peak Savings Program will call an “event” and manage your energy use by adjusting the setpoint of your smart thermostat by no more than three degrees*. To ensure your comfort, we may cool your home or business in advance of an event. As a customer, you do not need to make any adjustments.

* Each thermostat manufacturer has a different pre-event and event schedule.

Google Nest Thermostats - Pre-Event: 60 minutes prior to the event adjust 2 degrees. Event: Adjusts 2 degrees.

Emerson Thermostats - Pre-event: no adjustment. Event: Adjust 3 degrees.

Honeywell Thermostats- Pre-event: no adjustment. Event: Adjust 3 degrees.

Events can occur from the months of June through October, and can be called between 1:00 PM and 8:00 PM. Up to 15 events can be called each year, and each event may last up to four hours. You will never be called on more than three consecutive days.

A notification will be emailed to you in advance of a scheduled event. An icon will also appear on your smart thermostat indicating that a Peak Day Event is taking place.

If you wish to opt out of an event, you may change the temperature on your thermostat at any time.*

*Opting out of too many events may disqualify you from the program.

For Google® Nest thermostats, preconditioning begins one hour prior to the event. For ecobee thermostats, there is no preset time for preconditioning. It is dependent on the home, weather conditions, and other factors. Neither Energate nor Carrier smart thermostats are currently set up to pre-cool your home.
