Q: What is the Peak Savings program?
A: The Peak Savings Program helps customers save energy, lower their energy costs, and reduce demand on the electric grid. By enrolling, customers allow the Peak Saving Program to automatically manage their energy use via their smart thermostat (adjusting the setpoint by no more than four degrees) on Peak Days when electric demand is extremely high. This small change makes a big difference in reducing demand and keeping energy costs low.
Q: What is a Peak Day and why does it occur?
A: The amount of energy the community uses at any given time changes constantly due to weather conditions, residential changes throughout the day, and operations of commercial and industrial companies. Sometimes all these situations overlap, causing the demand for electricity to become extremely high. These “events” are called Peak Days, and the goal of the Peak Savings Program is to reduce electric demand quickly and easily, without sacrificing anyone’s comfort at home or at work. Peak Days tend to occur when temperatures are very high.
Q: What happens during a Peak Day event?
A: On certain days when demand on the grid is extremely high, the Peak Savings Program will call an “event” and manage your energy use by adjusting the setpoint of your smart thermostat by no more than three degrees. To ensure your comfort, we may cool your home or business in advance of an event. As a customer you do not need to make any adjustments.
Q: When could an event occur and how often?
A: Events can occur from the months of June through October, and can be called between 1:00 PM and 8:00 PM. Up to 15 events can be called each year, and each event may last up to four hours. You will never be called on more than three consecutive days.
Q: How do I know when an event is occurring?
A: A notification will be emailed to you in advance of a scheduled event. An icon will also appear on your smart thermostat indicating that a Peak Day event is taking place. In addition, CEIVA participants will see a notification on their in-home display and thermostat the day of or the night prior which notes the specified start time and duration.
Q: Can I adjust my thermostat during events? What if I am not comfortable with the temperature adjustment?
A: If you wish to opt out of an event, you may change the temperature on your thermostat at any time.
Q: Does the program help me lower my bill?
A: Yes, by participating in this program and installing a new smart thermostat, you can expect to save approximately 10-12% on heating and 15% on cooling costs using a high-efficiency smart thermostat*.
*Individual savings are not guaranteed.
Q: Which smart thermostat models are eligible?
A: The following thermostats are eligible for the program: ecobee3 lite, ecobee Smart Thermostat, Nest Learning Thermostat, Nest Thermostat E, Nest Thermostat, Energate, Carrier, Honeywell Home TCC series smart thermostats, and Emerson Sensi smart thermostats.
Q: Can I use my existing smart thermostat?
A: Yes! If you currently have one of the following smart thermostats installed in your home, you may participate: ecobee3 lite, ecobee Smart Thermostat, Nest Learning Thermostat, Nest Thermostat E, Nest Thermostat, Energate, Carrier, Honeywell Home TCC series smart thermostats, and Emerson Sensi smart thermostats.
Q: How do I know that I am eligible to participate?
A: To be eligible for the Peak Savings Program:
- Customers must enroll an existing, qualifying smart thermostat or purchase a qualifying thermostat from the online store and install it. The thermostat must be registered and installed at the location that receives GWP service.
- The smart thermostat must be connected to Wi-Fi and control central air conditioning or an air source heat pump.
- Customers may not have more than two thermostats in the home, and both must be smart thermostats from the same manufacturer.
- The program is available to single- and individually metered customers, multi-family customers, and small commercial customers with units that are 5.4 tons or less who are not listed in the medical registry.
- Customers’ accounts must be current and in good standing and all thermostats in the home must be able to be registered with the Peak Savings Program.
Q: I haven't received an enrollment confirmation email. What should I do?
A: If you have enrolled your smart thermostat and have not received an email confirmation, contact GWP Peak Savings at gwppeaksavings@franklinenergy.com for help troubleshooting any potential issues.
Q: What do I get for participating?
A: You will receive an initial bonus for enrolling, depending on the method you choose. If you choose to purchase a smart thermostat from the online store, you will receive a $100 instant discount on the purchase of each qualifying smart thermostat (up to two). If you choose to enroll an existing qualifying smart thermostat, you will receive a $50 sign-up bonus for each existing thermostat (up to two). Additionally, you will receive $50 each year you continue to participate. Sign-up bonus and annual bonus will be paid in the form of a Glendale Water & Power Peak Savings Prepaid Mastercard®.

Q: I got my $100 smart thermostat rebate at purchase — what happens if I fail to enroll in the Peak Savings Program?
A: Enrollment in the GWP Peak Savings Program is required to receive the $100 smart thermostat instant rebate. You have 40 days from the time of purchase, to enroll in the program. Failure to enroll within 40 days will result in a charge back for the $100 rebate on the credit card used to purchase the smart thermostat.
Q: When will I receive my $50 annual bonus?
A: The annual bonus will be delivered as a Glendale Water & Power Peak Savings Prepaid Mastercard® within four weeks of your enrollment anniversary.
Q: Can I continue participating in the Peak Savings Program if I move to a new house?
A: Yes. If you move to a new home within the Glendale service area, you can enroll in the program again by either purchasing a qualifying smart thermostat from our online store or enrolling a qualifying smart thermostat that is already installed in the home.
Q: Why is my Google Nest Displaying "energy rush hour?"
A: The Peak Savings Program is powered by Google Nest’s Rush Hour Rewards, so if you own a Google Nest, you will see “energy rush hour” displayed on your device during an event. Rush Hour Rewards events adhere to the same rules as Peak Day events (no more than 15 events: a maximum of three events per month, no more than four hours).
Q: Does the Peak Savings Program work with ecobee sensors?
A: Yes. Furthermore, please make sure to avoid placing your sensors in drafty or unusually warm or cold locations, such as near a vent, fan, window, or oven.
Q: Prior to an event, how far in advance will my home be preconditioned?
A: For Google® Nest thermostats, preconditioning begins one hour prior to the event. For ecobee thermostats, there is no preset time for preconditioning. It is dependent on the home, weather conditions, and other factors. Neither Energate nor Carrier smart thermostats are currently set up to pre-cool your home.
Q: I just moved into my new home. The previous owner was enrolled in the Peak Savings Program and left their smart thermostat behind. Can I sign up for the program?
A: Yes! If you move into a new home within the Glendale Water & Power service territory, you will need to re-enroll in the program. Please visit our enrollment page to sign up.
Q: Will I get to keep my old thermostat if I choose professional installation?
A: If your old thermostat contains mercury, it is legally required that we take it for safe disposal and recycling. If it does not contain mercury, your old thermostat will be left with you to store or dispose of.
Q: Where can I log into my ecobee smart thermostat account?
A: Go to ecobee.com and click on the “LOGIN” button.
Q: How do I enroll my Google Nest smart thermostat?
A: After purchase, all you need to do is install your new smart thermostat and connect it to your in-home wi-fi. The rest has been done for you!
Q: Can I get assistance installing my new smart thermostat?
A: Yes! When you purchase your smart thermostat from the online store, you can schedule to have a technician from Franklin Energy that is a certified contractor for Glendale Water & Power come and install the device. The cost for this service is $150.
Q: How am I helping the environment?
A: By reducing electric demand, you reduce GWP’s need to potentially use additional non-renewable energy resources to provide power to its customers.
Q: Is my data secure?
A: Yes. The Peak Savings Program is committed to protecting your privacy. The program’s industry-leading platform is specifically designed for data security. The platform is built on a custom cloud architecture complete with advanced features for ensuring data privacy and integrity. The Peak Savings Program also employs security industry best practices, such as authentication and encryption protocols.
